MDF vs. Solid Wood Cabinet Doors: Which Is Better for Painted Cabinets?
Share
We build kitchens with both solid wood and MDF doors at our cabinet shop, Crestwood Cabinet Co. When a customer wants painted cabinets, we usually recommend MDF. Here's why, and when solid wood is still the better choice.
What is MDF?
MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is made from fine wood fibers pressed together with resin into a dense, flat sheet. It has no grain, no knots and no growth rings. That makes it very stable and gives it a perfectly smooth surface for paint.
The problem with painted wood doors
A traditional wood Shaker door is five pieces: two stiles, two rails and a panel, glued together. Wood expands and shrinks with the seasons. On a stained door you never notice, but on a painted door the paint can crack along the joints where the rails meet the stiles. That hairline crack at each corner is the most common complaint about painted wood cabinets.
Why one-piece MDF doors don't crack
Our doors are machined on a CNC from a single sheet of MDF. The frame and panel are cut into one solid piece, so there are no joints at all, and nothing to crack through your paint. MDF also doesn't move much with humidity, so the doors stay flat and square.
Side-by-side comparison
- Painted finish: MDF wins. Smooth, no grain showing through, no cracked joints.
- Stability: MDF wins. It doesn't warp or twist with the seasons like solid wood can.
- Stained finish: Solid wood wins. MDF has no grain, so it's made to be painted, not stained.
- Dents: About even. Hard maples resist dents a little better; MDF is similar to softer woods.
- Water: Both need a good paint finish. Bare MDF swells if it soaks in water, so seal every edge (see how to paint MDF doors). Once painted, MDF doors hold up well in kitchens and baths.
- Cost: MDF is usually less expensive, especially for custom sizes.
- Weight: MDF is heavier. Standard 35mm European hinges handle it fine; use the right number of hinges for the door height.
When to choose solid wood
If you want a stained finish that shows natural grain, choose wood. For anything painted, including white, gray, navy, green or black kitchens, one-piece MDF gives you a better-looking door that stays that way.
Order one-piece MDF doors
Every door we sell is CNC-machined from one piece of 3/4" MDF, cut to your exact size. Choose raw, sanded or primed, and add hinge boring if you want it. See the styles or start your order.
